Breakdown

  • Xbox wants to bring newer Call of Duty games to Game Pass
  • This has been discussed internally, with some not agreeing to the move as it could impact the franchise's sales
  • Microsoft also wants to increase the price of Game Pass Ultimate

Xbox is considering bringing newer Call of Duty games to Game Pass, with these talks reportedly going on for quite a while. There are people within the company who are for this move and against it, as these executives try to make Game Pass more worthwhile.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has considered putting newer entries of the franchise in Game Pass for quite some time. While some of the execs are here for it, others have argued that putting these newer titles on Game Pass would diminish the massive sales these games are known for.

Fans wouldn’t mind seeing older Call of Duty games on Game Pass, especially since Xbox is the reason some of them have online play again. However, putting the newer titles on their service might bite them in the foot, since fans still buy these games in droves. Even something maligned like Modern Warfare 3 is still being played to this day and probably sold plenty of physical copies.

Those aren’t the only plans Xbox is considering for Game Pass, as the company is thinking of hiking the price for the service’s Ultimate Tier. Subscribing to this tier gives players access to these games on both Xbox Series consoles and PC. Hiking up those prices isn’t going to make players happy, though it might justify bringing in CoD to the service.

All of this is under consideration, but none of this paints Xbox in a particularly positive light. It feels like they just want Call of Duty on Game Pass for a bit of buzz, before deciding to do something else that will make money. Then again, even if a game like Hi-Fi Rush makes money and gains critical acclaim, Xbox will shut down its studio for no particular reason.

We’re getting a new Call of Duty game revealed next month, with many theorizing that this is going to be a new Black Ops entry.
