Thinking about setting sail with a massive raiding party? In this guide, we’ll be taking a look at the max Sea of Thieves crew size and checking to see if you can increase it. After all, there’s strength in numbers when it comes to looting and pillaging.

It’s only natural to check and see if you can invite all of your friends to form a small pirate army in Sea of Thieves. Unfortunately, the game does prevent you from doing this by limiting your crew size to a certain number.

After learning more about the Sea of Thieves max crew size, feel free to take a look at some of our other guides on the action-adventure game. We’ve got info on how to get the Chest of Fortune and a guide on how to get Curses that might interest you.

Can You Increase Your Max Crew Size in Sea of Thieves?

Though players have been asking for this feature for years, it still isn’t possible to increase your maximum crew size in Sea of Thieves. The maximum number of people you can have in your crew is four, but that’s only if you have a large ship.

Ships in Sea of Thieves come in three different sizes. Here’s a closer look at the different ship sizes in Sea of Thieves and the max crew size for each:

  • Sloop (Small) – two crew members
  • Brigantine (Medium) – three crew members
  • Galleon (Large) – four crew members

The max crew size for the Sloop and the Brigantine are just right but some players will find a lot of extra space on Galleons if you've not got a large crew. These larger ships definitely look like they can harbour more than four people, but Rare doesn’t seem to have any plans for allowing more people aboard. So, if you have a large group of friends looking to band together to form your own little pirate haven, you're out of luck.

That's not to say it's not technically possible to play with more than four friends, however. While ships can only support up to four players if you have the Galleon, if you and your friends load into the game at the same time, there's a chance you will all join the same server. Repeat the process until you're all in one server and meet up. Here, you can simply form two separate groups/crews and go on adventures together. It's not a perfect solution, but it's the only one if you've got more than four friends looking to play together in Sea of Thieves.
